How often should you pump a septic tank?

Plan on pumping about every 3½ years. If you do not remember the last pump-out, treat an inspection this year as cheap insurance — especially if the house has been occupied steadily.
Example: a 4-person house in Cypress or Katy with a 1,000-gallon tank and no disposal lands around every 3½ years — in line with the EPA’s 3–5 year rule of thumb.
How we calculate this
No tank size given, so we used 1,000 gallons — a common size for a 3-bedroom house.

Solids accumulation is modeled at about 70 gallons per person per year, then capped between 1 and 8 years.
This follows EPA-style guidance that a typical household system is inspected every few years and pumped every 3–5 years, then adjusted for occupancy, tank volume, and a disposal. It is not a soil test, camera inspection, or permit review.
The short answer
The U.S. EPA’s public guidance for homeowners is straightforward: have the system inspected on a regular cadence and pump when solids have built up — commonly every 3 to 5 years for a typical house. That is a rule of thumb, not a promise. A retired couple on a 1,500-gallon tank in Magnolia can often go longer than a family of six on a 1,000-gallon tank in Cypress with a disposal under the sink.
What actually fills the tank
A septic tank holds wastewater long enough for solids (sludge) to settle and fats (scum) to float. The clearer middle layer flows to the drainfield. Pumping removes sludge and scum so they do not wash into the field. Once the field is clogged, you are no longer talking about a $400 pump-out.
- More people = more solids, faster.
- A smaller tank reaches the same solids level sooner.
- A garbage disposal sends ground food into the tank and shortens the interval — often by about a third in extension-service tables.
- Guests, a home business, or a rental that turned over can throw a “we pumped four years ago” plan out the window.

*We still cap the calculator at 8 years. Tanks should be opened and looked at even when the math says you have time — baffles fail, filters clog, and “we never had a problem” is how drainfields die.
Texas note
Unincorporated Harris, Montgomery, Waller, and Fort Bend lots are often on septic even when the next subdivision is on city sewer. If you bought in the Houston exurbs, do not assume the previous owner pumped on a schedule. Ask for receipts. If there are none, pump and inspect before you have a wet yard in August.
Methodology
The calculator estimates years ≈ tank gallons ÷ (people × 70 gallons of solids per person per year). That 70-gallon rate is chosen so a 1,000-gallon tank with 3–4 occupants lands in the EPA’s 3–5 year band. A disposal multiplies the result by 0.65. We round to the nearest half year and clamp between 1 and 8 years. If you enter years since the last pump, we compare that to the interval and say whether you are on track, in the window, or overdue.
